一次自以为的面试失误,让我不得不换一种方式和 hiring manager 交流,居然让他对我印象深刻

当时刚出校门找工作的我,天真地认为只要背诵好项目经历就可以了。虽然在背诵过程中很多次我能明显感受到面试官的不耐烦,我都没有想到要改变策略,直到有一次我忘词了,当时只有几秒种的反应时间,所以只能硬着头皮思考,用自己的逻辑来回答,却意想不到的第一次获得了面试官的赞许!

With this positive experience under my belt, I started to talk impromptu a lot more during the interviews, rather than relying on mechanic recitation. 结果,用这样的沟通方式和 hiring manager 交流效果比以前好太多!一来二回,impromptu and organic conversation also helped me become a better thinker, 极大地锻炼了我的思考能力,以及快速地从非常 abstract 的信息中提炼出思维框架和逻辑链。很快,我就拿到了 offer! 这次我自以为的失误,却让我真正明白在面试中如何和 hiring manager 交流!What I learned --

Effective communication 不是简单的背诵项目经历。它是一项全方位技能要求很高的技能

Data analyst and data scientist are business roles, 我们的分析是要通过和 stakeholder 合作才能落地的,所以如何把分析思路讲成一个 convincing story, 自圆其说还要让人信服,这种沟通能力其实比分析要难,比分析重要,而这也是我们中国同学在面试中的减分项和难点。I hear this often:

"还有对job search最致命的,就是不知道如何用professional语言和方法去表达自己,展示自己。"

"口语并不专业,我进入二面的几率几乎为零"

First, what qualifies as effective communication?

要让hiring manager 对你印象深刻,your communication needs to have these components, 缺一不可

  1. Poise. Can you function under pressure?
  2. Personality. Are you curious?
  3. Quick thinking. Can you develop a framework to tackle a problem with imperfect information?
  4. Reasoning skills. Are you capable of logical thinking?

比如面试中要考的 product sense,你的这个 sense 必须是通过语言这个载体来呈现的,这个交流过程既抽象又具体。

抽象在你的思维,具体在:你要通过有穿透力的语言来准确无误地展现这个抽象的东西,真的不是能用英语简单沟通就可以的。这其实是大多数中国同学拿不到 offer 的一个大碍,也是他们的一大误区,认为面试前只要来几场 mock interview 就可以了

Communication is thinking. A messy communication is indicative of a messy mind. And your quick thinking and reasoning skills will have to be based on your in-depth understanding of business and its underlying mechanism.  

公司愿意高价买单的永远是你的头脑, 有条不紊,思维逻辑清晰地回答问题是DA/DS 的面试重点,你的用词,结构,以及句子和句子之间的逻辑排序向公司展现了你的思维能力。这些支撑 effective communication 后面的知识是需要你自己积累和沉淀的,这篇文章不可能赘述。

But I can definitely give you some tactical tips on how to ensure the clarity of your communication, and give you some sentence structures you can use during your next interview.

Tip #1 - Learn to summarize. Always start with a high level statement to summarize what you are about to say, before you say anything, otherwise you will lose the hiring manager at hello :)

这也是中国同学的一大误区,一上来就讲细节,让人听了不知所云,因为没有 context! Context will prepare the listener and give meaning to what you want to say. In business, we call it POV, or point of view.

Tip #2 - Learn to use the right sentence structure, and use connecting words to join ideas together

如果把单词想象成珍珠,而 sentence structure 和 connecting words 就是把它们串成一条项链的线,那么它们在oral communication 中的重要性可想而知。

Here are some sentence structures you can use to establish clarity in your communication.

  1. The background of this project is...

  2. The purpose of this project is to...

  3. My thought process is...

  4. Let's start with...

  5. Now let's move on to...

  6. Let me elaborate on this aspect of the problem...

  7. I'd like to sum up the main points which are...

  8. In conclusion...

  9. I'd like to sum up the main points which are...

  10. Before we start, my assumption is...
